Brendan James' Biography
Brendan James has been engineering and producing music for the better half of his life, recording himself early on as a child and moving on to DJing and beat production in his teens, his musical and artistic ambitions have always remained a clear focus for him. Brendan is a 2005 graduate of the New England Institute of Art in Boston with a degree in Audio Production and Music. Through his studies he interned at several recording studios including Mad Oak, Blink Studios and Get Nice Music working with such artists as Toussaint, Godsmack, Steven Tyler and Daddy Yankee. At Blink music Brendan studied under Tim Lukas, a world renowned composer and producer in the field of film and video game scoring and a master of orchestral sampling and synthesis. Accomplished in electronic music production, Brendan credits himself as a rhythmic and synth programmer as well as keyboard player and vocalist with a deep passion for funk, soul, lounge and jazz.
Brendan is also a reputable live sound engineer with work in both the corporate and entertainment fields with artists including John Legend, Patti Labelle, Sharon Jones, Adventura and Bon Jovi. He has toured with theatre groups nationally as a soundman and engineered events with notable persons such as Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and Muhmar Kent (Coca-Cola). As a sound supervisor he has setup and operated audio systems throughout the country with a focus on acoustics and electrical system design. He was a recent guest on the Bravo Network as a sound engineer / performance coach for Housewives of New Jersey Star Mellissa Gorga (season 3).
In 2006 Brendan moved to Brooklyn, NY where he continued to work on his productions with vocalists and expanding network of studio musicians. In 2008 he incorporated Abstract Rhythm Rhythm Group LLC shortly thereafter renovating and constructing the 3 room facility that would become Abstract Rhythm Studio DUMBO. Since then Brendan has had the opportunity to work with major labels such as Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Records through their gospel and Hip-Hop departments. In 2009 he began work with UK recording artist Kelly Waters working on the production of her full length album in a deal with Inbond Management Inc. (N’dea Davenport). This production stands as a major milestone in Brendan James production catalogue with full orchestration including horn and string sections as well as electronic and live elements and the use of a studio band.
In Late 2010 Brendan released his third full-length solo album under the name DJ Baked Potato. “Strange Places” is a unique approach to funk and soul music feturing ambient electronic elements, the use of a full studio band and harmonious vocal layerings. The album is also a homage to many of Brendan's influences in style of late 60’s and 70’s R&B and Soul music. “Strange Places” has been released through his own record label Baked Potato Music and internationally through online music stores iTunes, Amazon, Beats Digital, and Digital Tunes in the U.K. It has been hailed as “an emotionally invested journey through Jazz-Funk and soul”.
